Fighting dangerous molds, allergens in the home

GLENWOOD, Ill. -- The first comprehensive home test kit on the market that detects the most common indoor allergens and molds was introduced at the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 16-20. Before Allergen Alert, a comprehensive test of the home had to be performed by an industrial hygienist costing up to thousands of dollars.

The Allergen Alert, a new product from Healthy Home Air, allows homeowners to detect and identify the levels of the eight most common indoor allergens, including four types of molds, which could be affecting the air quality in their homes.

As professional cleaners know, molds and allergens in the home can result in poor indoor air quality IAQ. Poor IAQ, in turn, can trigger asthma and allergy symptoms and making families sick, but they are often impossible to detect without expensive professional consultation and testing.

"Cleaner indoor air benefits everyone, especially those people suffering from allergies, asthma or other respiratory conditions," said allergist Jonathan Bernstein, M.D., associate professor of medicine at University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and creator of the Allergen Alert. "There is an increased prevalence of asthma and allergies in the United States, likely due to an increased number of allergens. Plus, high levels of molds and allergens can cause serious health problems, and often a patient has no idea that his or her own home is causing the illness."

Each Allergen Alert kit contains two allergen collection traps, a video explaining the dangers of household molds and allergens and how the kit works, a brochure and instruction booklet, and a postage-paid return box for sending the dust samples collected to the laboratory for testing. Included with the purchase of the kit are laboratory services and a comprehensive home allergen report.

The allergen traps easily attach to a standard vacuum cleaner hose to collect a sample of dust. The sample is then labeled by room and sent to the laboratory for testing, and within two to three weeks the user receives a comprehensive report on the levels of eight important allergens and molds in the home stating whether those levels are high, moderate or low, along with extensive recommendations on how to solve any problems.

An inspection performed by a professional cleaner can uncover several key signs of mold and allergen in homes. Following an interview with the client, a professional can offer: Homes with water damage (even damage that has been repaired).
Visual signs of mold growth.
Unusual or noticeable odors, such as stale or stuffy air.

Healthy Home Air ( is a single source point business that is directly addressing the needs of allergy and asthma sufferers relating to the quality of residential indoor air.
