September 11, 2001: A Day We'll Not Forget

On Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, life may have been changed forever in the United States. Here, some cleaners offer their voices on the devastating terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.
- Martin Luther King

He who does not punish evil commands it to be done.
- Leonardo da Vinci

Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. Life was the same during the early hours, but shortly after 8:30 a.m., it all changed. I sat amazed, angry, sad, dazed, and a dozen other adjectives. A myriad of emotions took form on my face and in my heart. When my wife stood with me later in the day, and I tried to tell her what was happening, had happened, I couldn't speak. Words stuck in my throat, and my tears came once again.

At that moment, I decided I did not want the world my children are just learning to appreciate to be filled with hate and anger. Instead, I would encourage my family, friends and anyone I meet in the days and years to come that Americans stand above the hate-mongers. Our way of life is not to hide, or to shirk responsibility, or to pass the blame on the unsuspecting. We do not act on revenge, but we do not withdraw from acts of terrorism.

I thought I would write a stirring piece, reminding our readers that we not only stand together in this wonderful industry, but as Americans. But I decided that this page should be in the words of our readers. The following were part of the ICS Cleaning Specialist Bulletin Board, and are your words.

Saw it all live

I got back from cleaning a restaurant on the Hudson River across from the Towers and saw the both planes actually crash into the buildings and saw them both collapse. It was the most horrible thing I ever saw. I was pre-spraying the carpets and looking across the river at a beautiful sky and cityscape and saw the low flying plane go into the building and blow up, pieces falling to the ground and the top floors engulf in flames.

I am still very shaken up and people around me where crying and screaming.

'Twas the morn of my birthday, when I heard the news. The Yanks have bombed Saddam, kicked sand in his shoes. Desert Storm it was called, and the French with the Brits, where asked to join in, take out Iraq in tiny wee bits.

With pin pointed aim, the bombs they fell down. And flattened big buildings, in each little town. These Arabs must suffer, was the cry of the day, Saddam and his cohorts must dearly pay.

And now 10 years later, I waken again. But now it's Faye's birthday, when I hear the pain. Two towers, a symbol, of justice, free trade. A target on freedom.

Two airplanes, like missiles, their impact is nigh 100 floors up, through the windows they fly. With gambol like swaying, these two brothers pause. Not ready to surrender, to the terrorist cause.

They teeter and totter, they swing and they sway. While firemen and policemen, yell "get out of the way." No longer they wait, their death knell is calling. With fire and rubble, we all see them falling.

The heroes are many, the victims are too. And survivors are wondering, now what do we do? The cleanup begins, for life must go on. So ashes rise up, to replace that which hasgone.

It's with sadness, I sit here, wondering why Innocent people must suffer, and die. Avenge and revenge, the Yanks seem to say. But surely true justice will carry the day.

But I'm feeling thankful, tucked way down here. Cocooned by the ocean and immune to your fear.

As I ken what has happened, and feel your pain, we become brothers in arms, to seek freedom again.

New York City Under Attack

Now is not the time to be "consumed" by fear, anger, rage or hate. It is the time to be sure that those we care about are safe and that our affairs are in order.

It's normal for anyone to feel "negative emotions" now, but if we allow our emotions to run rampant, we will over react and make things worse than they would otherwise be. I do feel that we are, as of this morning, at war. But the main thing that ensures victory in a fight is not allowing your enemy to control you. In this situation, we have more than one enemy. Whoever is responsible for these attacks, and our tendency to lose control via over reacting.

From another Canadian I would like to convey all my deepest sympathy's to all Americans. I was shocked when I saw this unfolding . I have to say it made me feel ill and found it difficult to get through my day. When I got home I cried for all these people even though I do not know who they are. It is a sad thing that has happened. We are behind you 100 percent.

"And just a little while longer, and the wicked one will be no more; and you will certainly give attention to his place, and he will not be. But the meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." (Psalm 37:10,11)

"Up-Date" on our Friend

For those of you who know our fine cohort, Ian Thompson, who has always participated on this board, I thought you would appreciate an up-date.

I e-mailed him yesterday knowing that he also worked at the World Trade Center. His wife responded just now, and mentioned that our friend Ian was in Tower 2 on the 84th floor. She has not heard from him as of this moment.

Wishing his family the very best.

Evan and ICS, Thank you

Thank you for this board. In the darkest hours of last night (your day) it was great to be able to touch base with everyone here. The support you have from the Aussie media, government and public is incredible. All five of our TV programs have broadcast from New York and Washington all day commercial free.

We are with you my friends.

I'd like to encourage all of you to visit the ICS Cleaning Specialist Bulletin Board, and read the many threads concerning this horrendous day. In most instances, you will find yourselves uplifted by the spirit of the words it contains.

We are the same nation we were on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001. We don't need to change, we don't need to give in or to give up, or to react with vengefulness. We need to support our leaders and in doing so, carry on with our lives. We need to continue being freedom-loving Americans.

Together we can defeat this evil simply by not giving into the fear this despicable act tried to force upon us. Live your lives fully and completely, because that is singularly the greatest revenge you can return.
