Chemicals, Extractors and Hunter S. – The Road to ISSA

There are now but a few days until the 2002 installment of the ISSA/Interclean USA Exhibition, Convention and Educational Conference, Oct. 15-18 in Las Vegas.

There are a number of reasons to be excited: The jan/san show extravaganza is host to more than 700 exhibiting companies and 30-plus educational seminars and demonstrations. It’s a whirlwind of information funneled into a four-day tornado.

It’s a 40-minute flight from LAX.

What am I expecting? I’m not exactly sure. For me, one of the best things a show offers is product demonstrations. There are enough sprayers, scrubbers, extractors, applicators, protectors, removers and shakers in this business to bring to perfection every floor covering ever conceived by man. Believe it or not, it gets a bit monotonous writing about their capabilities month in and month out; let’s see those claims put to the test, live and in person.

In August I flew to Sacramento, Calif. for the CFI/PCUCA “Discover the Wealth” convention. It was a terrific event; the sights, the sounds, the people and the program made it three very educational and enjoyable days, with one exception: I mistakenly packed Kerouac for the plane ride. There’s something fundamentally wrong with reading “On the Road” at 35,000 feet.

No worries this time. The neon oasis allows for all manner of leeway when it comes to matters of literary indulgence. “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” was right where it should be, sandwiched between “The Art of War” and “Dorf on Golf.” Hunter S. Thompson’s seminal journey into the underbelly of The Beast always provides the intellectual insulation necessary to survive four days of auditory distress from jangling slot machines and the visual malaise brought on by casino-floor carpeting reminiscent of something Peter Max threw up between gallery openings.

As you already have ICS in your hands, turn to page 24. The ISSA/Interclean USA 2002 Navigator Show Guide is a quick preview of some of the companies exhibiting at the show, what they bring to the table and what booth that table resides in. The only problem is a decided lack of information regarding the educational conference. I plead innocent; there are simply too many tracks with too many seminars to provide any sort of useful guide here.

To those of you attending ISSA/Interclean 2002, enjoy the show. To everyone, enjoy the October issue of ICS.
