The 56th Annual ASCR Convention and Exhibition, recently held in Colorado Springs, Colo., drew more than 700 attendees to the four-day event that featured 25 educational seminars. Timely and pertinent topics such as mold remediation, restoration issues, Caucasian and Navajo rugs, microbial remediation, insurance fraud, commercial carpet cleaning, managing a temporary workforce and psychrometry’s role in drying, were just the tip of the educational iceberg.

ASCR President Reed Dow, CR, opened the exhibition on the first day of the convention. Approximately 80 exhibitors filled the two exhibit halls, displaying the latest products for cleaning, restoration and remediation projects.

Kicking off the event was keynoter and management consultant Mack Clark, formerly of Honeywell and Business Dynamics. “You work awfully hard for your money,” began Clark. “This is an all-encompassing and all-engulfing job.” His presentation shed light on the four energy drainers for business owners.

The topic that drew the most response from attendees involved mold remediation and the legal, health and insurance issues surrounding it. Ed Montz, Jr., Ph.D., CIAQP, outlined several maintenance issues that can lead to moisture problems, such as leaving moisture in carpets after they’ve been cleaned in a school or commercial setting, sewage backups, dirty HVAC systems or the failure to repair leaks such as plumbing, roofing, flashing or around windows.

Phil Morey, Ph.D., of Air Quality Sciences, Inc. echoed those thoughts in his discussion of mold remediation issues. He outlined the principles for mold cleaning, which involves developing a written protocol, identifying the extent of the surfaces colonized in a room, utilizing containment or other techniques that will reduce mold and spore emissions, applying existing guidelines (i.e., New York City, ACGIH) for removal of visible fungal colonization and using appropriate personal protection equipment during the process.

Holly Bailey, PE, CIE, and Patrick O’Donnell, CIE, discussed evaluating a problematic building using a team approach that includes architects, mechanical engineers, certified indoor environmentalists, environmental microbiologists and an occupational physician.

Ralph Godfrey addressed the role of the flooring inspector and the demands of the next decade. “The ‘professional’ inspector will become the consultant of the future,” said Godfrey, “working with experts from other related fields.”

Martin L. King, CR, AM, NIDR technical advisor, provided an overview on the tools and education required to become a consultant in the restoration industry.

The final sessions of the convention addressed a variety of issues, including: Dan Murray, CR, on controlling a temporary workforce; Dave Barkstedt, CFS, moderated a panel on selling commercial carpet cleaning; Ron Sanders, CFS, Triple “S”, addressed the importance of providing services beyond cleaning; and Doug Bradford, CR, Textile Cleaners of America, emphasized the importance of defining the company’s target market and the needs of the potential client.

Additionally, the association elected Cliff Zlotnik, CR, CMH, WLS, Unsmoke/Microban Systems, as its 48th president. Zlotnik has served ASCR as vice president and the Water Loss Institute (WLI) as its first president. Timothy Horrigan, CRS, Horrigan Cleaners, and William A. Warne, CR, Action Cleaning & Restoration, were also elected to positions on ASCR’s board of directors.

Highlighting the event’s conclusion was the awards ceremony. Those honored include: Woodard Cleaning & Restoration, St. Louis, Mo., with the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration; First Restoration Services, Charlotte, N.C., with the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Reconstruction; Michael Pinto, Ph.D., with the Golden Quill Award; William Lakin, CR, of DRL (Stafford, England) with the Martin L. King Award; Martin Gurian and Design Tex with the Steven M. Spivak Award for exceptional service to the industry; Earl and Nancy Woodard, Woodard Cleaning & Restoration, with the Helen Bradley Distinguished Service Award for their significant contributions to the association.

Next year’s convention and exhibition will be held in Palm Springs, Calif. on Feb. 12-16, 2002.
