IICRC's Cast of Characters

Thanks to ICS, I have been able to use this column to share with you the many things that have made the IICRC successful. One thing I haven’t made much mention about is the dedication of the IICRC Executive Committee. This isn’t because of a lack of value for the work these colleagues have done, but rather because these professionals have volunteered countless resources towards the success of the IICRC for the benefit of the industry as a whole, not necessarily for personal gain. These individuals spend a great amount of time on committees, meetings, review panels, as well as fulfilling the duties of their respective office. Basically, these dedicated individuals, along with the hard work of Kenway Consultants, serve the needs of IICRC registrants daily.

Lee Zimmerman has served the IICRC Board of Directors for more than 10 years. Most of that time he was the Chairman of the Instructors and Schools Committee. This committee oversees everything that has to do with IICRC instruction and school policies. Lee has had to personally read every class manual produced for training by IICRC approved schools to make sure that all information necessary was contained in each one. He served in that capacity for more than eight years through numerous revisions of examination materials, through an explosive growth of instruction categories, and enormous growth in the number of instructors and schools offering IICRC-approved instruction. Lee first participated on the IICRC board as the representative from UCCI. At the last Board of Directors meeting, Lee retired from the chair position to explore other opportunities within the IICRC and is currently creating a mentoring program for new board members. His goal is to design a program that will help new board members feel more a part of the institute and its operation so they will feel more willing and are better prepared to actively participate in the board’s functions. Throughout his tenure, he has also had to run his cleaning business, Keystone Carpet and Furniture Cleaning, in Greensburg, Pa.

Carey Vermeulen has also been involved with the IICRC Board of Directors since the early 1990s. His debut on the IICRC board was as the representative from FIOCCFD. This is the current shareholder and industry trade group from Ontario, Canada. Carey has been active in the Upholstery technical advisory committee (TAC), acting as chair for the last several years. He is the owner of Glenncarey Carpet Cleaning located in Claremont, Ontario, near Toronto. Just recently, Carey and his Upholstery TAC completed the IICRC Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Upholstery Cleaning S300. Carey has demonstrated a keen ability to build solid relationships with the furniture manufacturing industry and has gained their confidence and support for the standard. His current work is to update the upholstery cleaning technician examination so it’s consistent with the new information gleaned from the standard.

Ruth Travis started on the IICRC Board as the representative from ISCT. She quickly made numerous inroads by serving on several committees at once. One of her passions was, and still is, serving on the Long Range Planning committee for the IICRC. Ruth was elected to the executive committee two years ago and has served as secretary since that time. In addition, she serves as chair for of the IICRC’s most important committees, Marketing and Public Relations. In this role, she has taken on many challenges and brought about several great opportunities for the IICRC. She also runs Interior Care, her Chattanooga, Tenn.-based carpet and upholstery-cleaning firm.

Darrell Paulson from Advanced Restoration Specialists, Inc. in Southern California has been active on the IICRC Board of Directors for many years. Darrell is one of the four individual shareholder/owners of IICRC. His enthusiasm during the Board of Director meetings is legendary, as well as his detailed Treasurer’s reports. Darrell is responsible for making sure all committees, task forces, and the Board of Directors stay on budget. Since the explosive growth of the IICRC has also meant that the budget has grown tremendously, each year it becomes more of a challenge to manage and Darrell’s keen eye has keep us in check. He also chairs the Finance committee to approve budget requests and create a new annual budget.

Jeff Bishop is no stranger to any of us who know anything about the cleaning, inspection and restoration industries. Jeff has served the IICRC in various roles, such as ISCT representative, Chairman of Examinations and Standards Committee, and Vice President before settling in as Chairman of the Certification Board. Jeff is responsible for making sure the technical side runs smoothly. He interacts with the Technical Advisory Committee, the Examinations & Standards, and Instructors & Schools committee chairs. He helps numerous TAC chairs with technical issues and also involves himself with many other committees. He also is an active IICRC instructor and owns a school, Clean Care Seminars. Jeff has one of the only on-line courses approved for CECs in the cleaning industry.

Without the help and dedication of these individuals, the IICRC would not be as well regarded as it is today. Thank you does not begin to cover the debt owed to each and every one of them. If any of you happen to see these people at an industry event, please convey your own thanks to them. I know it would be appreciated.
