WASHINGTON, June 17 (Reuters) - Flooring maker Mohawk Industries Inc. on Thursday said it would stay in Georgia and build two new facilities to consolidate some operations and retain 485 jobs in the southern state.

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue said the state beat out sites in South Carolina and Maryland for the Mohawk project, which includes assembly and distribution facilities.

Mohawk employs 18,000 people in the state, making it one of Georgia's largest employers.

The company will spend $33 million on the facilities, according to Perdue's spokeswoman.

Mohawk received incentives from the state worth $4.8 million, according to Georgia's Industry, Trade and Tourism Department. That included tax credits against state corporate income taxes and grants to help local officials make site and road improvements the company needs.

The company's chief financial officer, John Swift, said Georgia's incentives package was competitive compared with offers from other states.

"Georgia offered a competitive package with other states and we have a good employment experience with Georgia-area employees," Swift said.

Swift also said Mohawk may add 125 new jobs to its Georgia facilities, depending on growth in the business.
