Taking It Out for a Test Drive

This month ICS is kicking the tires on a new multimedia approach aimed at delivering to you a much more comprehensive, in-depth editorial package. Ladies and gentlemen, start your search engines.

One challenge we’ve always faced when it comes to the feature articles and columns appearing in ICS is length. There are only so many pages to an issue, so many issues in a year, yada yada yada. So when one of our experts has a “Eureka!” moment and the words begin pouring out with Niagara-like abandon, I’m faced with two options: either cut the text way back, or else slice and dice it into two, three, four parts or more.

Enter option No. 3.

In our print edition you’ll find “The CRI SOA: A Round Table Discussion,” four pages of ideas and information from both sides of the SOA debate; the entire article, however, runs about twice that. So what to do? I’m not about to start paraphrasing my way through an hour-long discussion in order to make it conform to a nice, neat four-page package, nor does the thought of spreading it out over two or three months make me jump for joy.

That’s why, at the end of the article, you’ll find a short paragraph directing you to our Web site at, where you can find the feature in its entirety. This way, you can sample the article in print, and if it’s not to your liking, hey, time to move on, no harm, no foul. But if you find yourself wanting more, instead of having to wait a month for the next installment, you can head straight to our online edition and get the whole story. We’re also taking this approach with our “Connections Conference 2007: Clear Sailing in Clearwater” show wrap up.. Every year we benefit from the talents of Cliff Grost, who generously provides us with hundreds of images from the Connections Events. However, we are extremely limited in the number of pictures we can include in our print edition. Once again, problem solved: check out an album’s worth of images from the Connections Conference and Exhibition at

Like I said, we’re kicking the tires here, seeing what works and what doesn’t. It’s important for us to hear what you think of this cross-platform approach; write us at and let us know what we can do to better deliver the information you seek.
