Shoe Covers and Door Guards: A Fit For All Seasons

Basking in the warmth of my heated keyboard – wait, let me write that down…wait, I just did. But that’s certainly an idea for someone to get to work on. If we can have heated toilet seats, we ought to easily be able to offer heated keyboards.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand: I am sitting in my warm office looking out the window at a raging blizzard. With six inches of snow in the last two hours and eight more inches expected, my thoughts turn to you, the thousands of professionals who are right now out in similar weather, fighting to make a living in these nasty conditions.

Lest we forget, there are also thousands of professionals in the Sunbelt who, while perhaps not wind and snow, are also fighting to make a living. No matter what you are seeing today out your windshield, snow or sun, there are a couple of gadgets that can help you through the winter, and that will continue to be useful on warm, sunny days. Cold air, blowing snow, bugs and flies are all suddenly on the VIP list (“Come right in!”) when you leave your customer’s front door open to run your hose from the truckmount. Imagine what your customer thinks as the warmth leaves her home and the cold and snow come blowing in. What happens to the idea of having a positive experience with a professional cleaner when you factor in the bugs and flies swooping in through the open door?

These issues are easily prevented with a door guard that allows the door to be open yet seals it against entry of unwanted substances. This padded device is designed to fit over the edge of the door with extra padding that can tuck into the opening of the door, sealing in the heat and keeping out the bugs. A door stopper is also attached to hold the door snug. Models are now available that will fit any size door up to nine feet and are imprinted with the phrase “Because We Care.” Summer or winter – especially in the winter – this tool is a must.

Don’t forget the positive effect the door guard will have on your customers. It is another one of those tools that sets you apart from the competition, and imprints on the mind of your customer that you care, really care, about their home and possessions.

Another absolute must when the snow flies are shoe covers or booties. But don’t reserve them for snow only; they will make a huge impression on your customer any time of the year.

When should you wear shoe covers? On every job, whether the customer sees you or not. When first entering the home, put the shoe cover on and let the customer see you doing it. Just about everyone has to make one or two trips to the van during a job. When you leave the house, take the shoe covers off, then put them on again at the door threshold when you return. This keeps the snow and soil outside which is otherwise attracted to the damp bottom of your work shoes. As an added benefit, they cover your ugly and worn work shoes.

Leaving a couple pair of shoe covers with the homeowner is a very nice touch and always appreciated. They can wear them over their shoes or stocking feet to keep their feet dry. This one little act may be the difference in your customer fully appreciating your service or wondering if you really care about her and the work you do. Try it, you have nothing to lose.

On a personal note, for you cold-weather folks, this is a great time of year to put a smile on. The days are getting longer and you can almost smell spring. For those of you in the Sunbelt, look out, it’s soon going to be a hot, humid summer.
