IICRC Makes a Change for the Future

As has been widely reported, the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification welcomed its first full-time, paid president on Aug. 1, when Patrick Winters officially joined our organization.

Pat brings a wealth of association management experience to his new post and, working with the board of directors, will raise to an entirely new level the value of the Institute to the industries it serves.

Creating this new position represents a significant departure from how the Institute has conducted its business for the past 30 years. Naturally, there are many questions in the marketplace about why the IICRC board opted to take this course and how it will impact our great industry.

Why Hire a New President for the Institute?

For its entire 37-year history, the Institute has relied on a volunteer president and CEO, working with the board of directors, to manage the organization. Over the past several years, the Institute has grown significantly and the demands on the volunteer president and CEO have increased in direct relationship to that growth.

As a result, the president and CEO began wearing two full-time hats: managing her or his own business and managing the Institute. Efficiently and effectively carrying out these dual roles became increasingly difficult. In addition, running a major not-for-profit organization with the stature of the Institute requires a skill set that differs in many ways from running a cleaning and restoration business.

Pat, who was hired after an extensive search, has extensive experience in areas such as government relations, not-for-profit law and finance, strategic planning, and organizational development that will be of great value in the years ahead.

What Are the Roles of the Institute's Chairman, Executive Committee, and Board Going Forward?

One thing that will not change with a full-time president is the participation of the chairman, executive committee and the board members in the affairs of the Institute. We will continue to be intimately involved in setting overall direction and developing policy.

The Institute’s committee structure, where the real work of the organization occurs, will not change either. We will continue to tap into the collective wisdom and expertise of our volunteers in the areas of education and standards-setting to make certain that we remain at the forefront of the industry.

Pat will report to the chairman and the board. He will ensure that the direction and policies set by the board are implemented and will work with the Board to develop and execute a strategic plan for the Institute.

What Does This Mean to Professionals and Firms Currently Certified and Registered by the Institute?

The real beneficiaries of a full-time IICRC president are certified professionals and firms. For one, Pat will focus on growing the Institute in current and new markets, and internationally in places like the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan.

The revenue generated from this growth will enable us to increase investment in programs such as marketing certified professionals and firms to consumers and other purchasers of inspection, cleaning, and restoration services.

He will also be working to strengthen Institute collaboration with mills and build rapport with influencers in allied industries such as insurance, architecture, and facility management.

Our industry badly needs representation with federal, state, and local regulators and Pat will apply his extensive experience in government affairs to help fill this vacuum. The list of benefits to registered professionals and firms from having a full-time president is almost endless.

What Role Will Tom Hill Play Now?

We are grateful that Tom Hill will continue in his role with the Institute, enabling us to take advantage of his industry experience and management skills.

Tom has been an invaluable counselor to the chairman, executive committee and board for many years. He was actively involved in the search for our new president, briefing each of the finalists, providing them with relevant background documents on the Institute, and participating in the interview process.

Tom and his team will continue to run the day-to-day operations of the Institute, including processing and grading exams, updating technician and company renewals, and dealing with issues like violations of organizational rules, policies and procedures, ethics issues in the industry and trademark usage.

I want to thank our board of directors for their investment of time and effort in screening the candidates for the presidency of the Institute. Their review of the credentials of almost 100 candidates for the position was rigorous, thorough, and very professional. As a result, we were able to retain an exceptional candidate to work with us to maximize the full potential of the IICRC.
