Nor'easter cleanup continues in flooded homes

NORFOLK -- Donald Jenkins has been busy pumping out water collecting inside basements in the Colonial Place neighborhood - the same four basements, and one of them his own.

Jenkins, the owner of Dycarp Carpet Cleaning, said that when he and his wife, Debra, left for work Friday their basement was dry. They returned to 16 inches of water. Nearly everything stored there, including power tools and exotic woods, was damaged.

When power was restored to their home Saturday, the Jenkinses found that it wasn't floodwater but ground water seeping into the basement. With the ground saturated and the water table full, the Jenkinses' basement was still filling with water Sunday, as were their neighbors'.

"We've probably had three times in 15 years that we've had this kind of damage," he said.

While Jenkins slogged through wet basements, Hampton Roads continued to clean up on the first sunny day since the nor'easter struck.
