What It Takes to be a Success

How is your ability to get back up after you have been knocked down? Is there an area in your business that gives you grief and headaches? Are you determined to tackle the problem and come up with a solution? Is there a referral source that you really want to give you business and you are not going to quit until they start to give you business? Your ability to persevere in the face of adversity is key to achieving the success you seek.

Examining this and a few other areas can be quite revealing about your company and level of success.

McDonald’s is a terrific example of consistency. Wherever you buy a McDonald’s hamburger or fries, it is always the same. How about your operation? Are your technicians cleaning the same way for every service according to a written company policy and procedure manual? What about your marketing?

Do you see and contact your referral sources via visits, cards, gifts, emails, etc. on a consistent basis? Many people say referral marketing doesn’t work, but they just contact referral sources a time or two rather than every month, year after year.

Do you believe in yourself and your ability to become a success in your business? Without that belief, it is nearly impossible to reach your goals and dreams. Begin by winning some small victories and then work on bigger and bigger ones.

Confidence comes about through achievement. Set some small goals for yourself and work at making them reality. As your goals and achievements get bigger and bigger, so will your belief in your abilities.

Consistency is crucial to your success

Nothing can take the place of coming in early and staying late, especially in the early years. Just working hard, of course, does not ensure success. I am reminded of the story of the guy who got up early every morning and worked until dark digging a hole in his backyard. After a month of hard work, he had…a hole in his backyard.

You want to work hard, but you also need to work smart.

Winners are determined to win and let nothing stop them. Recently, LeBron James and Peyton Manning both departed after losing their respective games without congratulating the victors. Some folks call this poor sportsmanship, but I believe it points out their determination to win and the utter pain they experience when they fall short.

Ask yourself how determined you are to be a big success and whether you are determined to achieve success or merely hoping for the best.

The little details can lead to big rewards

Many business owners find it very difficult to find time to make a plan for their business. They seem to always be reacting to situations rather than being proactive and steering the ship on a successful course.

Focus not only involves planning, but also the ability to “read the tea leaves,” to determine what the future holds and stay ahead of the curve. For instance, if your company only cleans carpet and upholstery, you are missing out on the income from tile and grout cleaning, Oriental rug cleaning, water damage restoration, odor removal and other lucrative services.

Another facet of the importance of focusing is your ability to see a problem and solve it. If your technicians are not up-selling well, can you focus on that problem and come up with a solution? Successful carpet-cleaning companies can and do.

The business owner has to answer to someone to give an account of his actions. In a rare case, a well-disciplined owner can answer to himself in the form of a focus/planning book. Most owners, though, need to answer to someone, to give an account of themselves.

Do you have someone to whom you have to explain what you are doing in your business? Get a coach or even an employee, but don’t use a friend, because they will be too kind and let you get away with slothful activity. Accountability is the key to moving your business forward and not going from month to month without making any progress. Get accountable today.
