Seniors are being advised by police to take precautions against being taken to the cleaners by a carpet-care scam in Muskoka, CA, according to a recent story on CottageCountryNow.ca.

According to the story:

The Bracebridge OPP issued a release this week saying the carpet-cleaning scam appears to be targeting local seniors, and works by having a fraudster contact victims either by phone or in person on a door-to-door basis.

“The deal is he is a carpet-cleaning person who would like to attend and clean the carpets. A price quote is provided as well as various contact numbers, all of which appear legitimate,” according to the release. “The fraudster advises payment is to be made by cash only. There is pressure put on the intended victim to sign up.”

Once the victim agrees to the service, the fraudster, who only provides a first name, will ask the homeowner to remain outside a room due to cleaning chemicals being used.

“At this point, it appears the fraudster is free to rummage through the victim’s personal belongings, stealing money and other easily-accessible items,” said the release. “When the service is completed, the culprits get paid cash, and are long gone before the victim realizes items are missing.”

When victims attempt to contact the phone numbers they are provided, they find they are not real.

To protect themselves, Bracebridge OPP reminds homeowners that they have the right to check out any caller or door-to-door salesperson by requesting written information, a call back number, references, and time to think over the offer.
