ARCS Educational Event has Record Attendance

The Association of Rug Care Specialists (ARCS) concluded a highly successful educational event and plant tour on April 28, 2012.

The Association of Rug Care Specialists (ARCS) concluded a highly successful educational event and plant tour on April 28, 2012. Approximately 100 rug care professionals participated in the two-day event, stretching the capacity limits of the meeting venues. 

“Attendance at the meeting exceeded our wildest expectations,” said ARCS president Bill Foulds. “The response is indicative of the value rug care professionals place on education and validates the mission of the association, which is to advance the art and science of rug care, educate rug care professionals and raise consumer awareness about quality rug care.”   

The educational event and plant tour were designed to provide learning and networking opportunities to rug-care specialists of all experience levels. The focus of many of the educational events was the Robert Mann Oriental Rugs plant in Denver, CO, a 14,000 square-foot facility that features state-of-the-art rug cleaning technology, including one of the world’s most advanced drying rooms. Participants were able to see demonstrations by Robert Mann and his team on restoring Navajo and Oriental rugs, cleaning and removing stains from Navajo rugs, and restoring hand-made rugs. Mann is widely recognized as an expert in cleaning and restoring Navajo, Oriental and hand-made rugs.

In addition to the rug care demonstrations, participants engaged in a roundtable discussion on the importance of inspecting rugs and documenting information for customers. Participants also heard speeches on the state of the retail rug industry and achieving their business and life goals. 

The ARCS also conducted its second-annual board meeting in conjunction with the Denver event. In his report to the membership, Foulds said that the association, which was founded in November 2010, was experiencing steady growth in membership. He also noted how the organization is about to launch its educational program, which will include entry-level and intermediate level courses, and that the finances of the association were on solid footing.

During the meeting, the association announced the results of an election to fill four open board seats. Newly-elected board members are Steven DeMarco, Triple “S” Carpet and Drapery Cleaners, Norwalk, CT; Jessica Kasparian, Turco Persian Rug Company, Ltd., Toronto, ON, Canada;  Robert Pettyjohn, Pettyjohn’s Cleaning and Restoration, Wake Forest, NC; and William Thornton, Oriental Rug Care, Ft. Laurderdale, FL. Leaving the board after completing their terms in office are Tim Horrigan, Horrigan Cleaners, Gardner, MA; Thea Sand, Emmanuel’s Rug and Upholstery Cleaners, Seattle, WA; and Phil Ziegler, Ziegler Preservation Cleaning Specialist, Danbury, CT.

The ARCS also recognized its 31 founding members during the annual meeting. These industry leaders were the impetus behind the new association, providing resources and experience to ensure that it began on solid footing.
