ARCS Event to Feature Demonstrations and Dialogue

Demonstrations and dialogue will be the themes when the Association of Rug Care Specialists (ARCS) holds its second annual educational event and plant tour April 27-29, 2012. The event, which will be held at Robert Mann Oriental Rugs, Inc., in Denver, CO, is designed to provide learning and networking opportunities to rug care specialists at all experience levels. It is open to both ARCS members and non-members.

Mann, who established his business in 1978, specializes in cleaning and restoring Oriental, Navajo, and other hand-made rugs and textiles for clients ranging from private individuals to dealers to museums worldwide.  His 14,000 square foot facility features the best in rug care technology, including one of the world’s most advanced drying rooms.

Mann’s impact on the global rug industry extends well beyond the U.S.  For more than 20 years, he has been a consultant to hand-made rug manufacturers in most of the major rug producing countries. In addition, he represents Woven Legends Restoration, which provides rug restoration services from its workshop in Izmir, Turkey.

The meeting will begin April 26 with a networking reception and tour of MasterBlend, a leading supplier of cleaning products and equipment to the rug care industry.

The venue will shift on April 27 to the Robert Mann Oriental Rugs plant. During the morning session, participants will see demonstrations and engage in dialogue with Mann and his team on three topics: restoration techniques for Navajo and Oriental rugs (with a focus on spinning, dyeing, color run, and reweaving); Navajo rug cleaning and stain removal (including a hands-on inspection of 40 to 50 Navajo rugs); and restoring hand-made rugs. The morning session will conclude with Mann demonstrating how to shear a sun-faded rug and remove “sprouts” from a modern AfPak/Choobi.

The afternoon session will begin with a presentation and demonstration of rug washing, stain removal and color run removal. Participants will then turn their attention to the plant’s wash room, where they can observe Mann’s Navajo and Oriental washing techniques, including addressing difficult challenges such as wine stain removal.

On April 28, participants will meet at the Sheraton Denver Downtown Hotel for the second annual meeting of the ARCS, including the election of officers. Following the meeting, they will hear an array of speakers, including gallery owner Paul Ramsey, who will discuss the state of today’s retail rug world. Ramsey, who owns galleries in Denver and San Francisco, specializes in antique rugs and is an importer from Afghanistan and other producing countries. There will also be a round-table discussion on the importance of inspecting rugs and documenting information for customers. The event will conclude with a presentation by business coach Howard Partridge, who has helped owners of many cleaning and restoration businesses reach their business and life goals. He is author of the soon-to-be published book, 7 Secrets of a Phenomenal L.I.F.E.

Fee for the three-day event is $500 for ARCS members and $600 for non-members. It includes the opening reception on April 26 and continental breakfast and lunch on April 27 and 28. Further information is available at www.rugcarespecialists.org.
