Millersville, Md. -- The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration recognized several industry leaders at its convention in Colorado Springs on March 7-10. Approximately 700 people attended the event, which featured 25 educational seminars and a multi-day exhibition. Seminar topics included mold remediation, restoration issues, specialty rugs, microbial remediation, insurance fraud and commercial carpet cleaning.

The association elected Cliff Zlotnik, CR, CMH, WLS, of Unsmoke/Microban Systems, in Braddock, Pa., its 48th president. Zlotnik served as ASCR's vice president and was the first president of the Water Loss Institute. Timothy Horrigan, CRS, of Horrigan Cleaners in Gardner, Mass. and William A. Warne, CR, of Action Cleaning & Restoration in Austin, Texas were also elected to positions on ASCR's board of directors.

Earl and Nancy Woodard of Woodard Cleaning & Restoration in St. Louis, Mo. received the Helen Bradley Distinguished Service Award. Earl Woodard was the ASCR president in 1973 and Nancy served as president in 1982 and 1983.

Other awards included the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Restoration, which also went to Woodard Cleaning & Restoration. The goal of their residential mold restoration project involved cleaning the contents that had specific sentimental value to the owners.

First Restoration Services of Charlotte, N.C. received the Phoenix Award for Innovation in Reconstruction for a project involving an 80-bed health facility damaged by Hurricane Floyd. Biohazard containment, a sewage backflow and rotten food were some of the issues that made this project particularly challenging.

The Golden Quill was awarded to Michael Pinto, Ph.D., of Kalamazoo, Mich., for his article entitled, "Home IAQ Remedies," which appeared in the November 2000 issue of Cleaning & Restoration, the association's trade magazine.

The Martin L. King Award was given to William Lakin, CR, of DRL in Stafford, England, for his innovation and contributions to the restoration industry. Lakin is the chairman of the National Institute of Disaster Restoration's (NIDR) education committee and has been responsible for their educational seminars for the past three years.

The Steven M. Spivak Award, named for ASCR's technical advisor, was presented to Martin Gurian and Design Tex, for developing and patenting a number of successful fabric innovations, including a flame retardant hospital cubicle fabric.

The Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration is a professional association comprised of more than 1,300 member organizations representing more than 20,000 cleaning and restoration professionals who specialize in the cleaning, treatment, repair and restoration of buildings and contents.
