CIMS Certification Opens at ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2007

ISSA will open Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) certification to the industry at large at ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2007, in Orlando, FL, October 23-26

Lincolnwood, IL, USA-ISSA will open Cleaning Industry Management Standard (CIMS) certification to the industry at large at ISSA/INTERCLEAN North America 2007, in Orlando, FL, October 23-26. The much-anticipated launch follows a successful case-study program that saw the majority of applicants achieve certification.

“This is a great moment for the cleaning industry, as service providers now have a consensus-based organizational designation they can achieve to prove their commitment to quality customer service and management excellence,” said ISSA Executive Director John Garfinkel. “We also see this new certification program, the first in the association’s history, as a big step toward successfully identifying and filling the needs of our growing industry.”

Building service contractors (BSCs) and in-house service providers (ISPs) are encouraged to apply for certification as soon as possible to begin the process of scheduling a third-party assessment. Certification applications are accessible at, and copies will be available during ISSA/INTERCLEAN at the ISSA Resource Center, Booth 2977. A self-assessment checklist will also be available at the show and online for organizations to use in determining their compliance with the Standard and readiness for certification.

Cleaning organizations that certified to the Standard during the recent case-study program will be honored prior to the keynote address at ISSA/INTERCLEAN this month. Written case studies on each organization will be available at the tradeshow and online following the event. Multiple panel discussions and seminars are also scheduled for the convention to allow members of the industry to ask certified organizations about their experiences and the benefits they have gained from CIMS.

“We have had an overwhelmingly positive response to CIMS certification from those who have gone through the process,” said ISSA CIMS Director Dan Wagner. “We also have received encouraging endorsements from the facility management and purchasing communities regarding CIMS certification as a valuable tool for them to use in identifying quality cleaning organizations.”

In fact, CIMS recently received an endorsement by the International Facility Management Association and was mandated in the new request-for-proposals, or RFPs, issued by the Air National Guard Readiness Center at Andrews Air Force Base and by the Port of Seattle for janitorial services at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

“We are encouraged as we continue to hear from organizations on a regular basis that are using CIMS to qualify their cleaning service providers,” said Wagner.

To help prepare organizations for certification, ISSA has certified 90 individuals as ISSA Certification Experts (ICE), arming them with the tools necessary to provide training and/or consulting services to those interested in complying with and preparing to be certified to CIMS. The ICE program is primarily geared toward distributors, manufacturers, manufacturer representatives, consultants, and others who wish to assist their facility service provider (FSP) customers in achieving certification.
