MoreThe 2002 Rhode Island Worker of the Year is Tammy D'Amico, 31, a commercial cleaning service owner (and mother of four girls, including twins) from West Warwick. She was nominated by her husband, John, who wrote, "Three years ago she started a small cleaning service. It has since grown into a lucrative business. She continues to work in the field, often working late hours and weekends ... I am amazed by her and very proud of her achievements."
"This is so surprising," said Tammy D'Amico of her award. "I work to provide for my children and my family, and we're happy. I'm adding carpet care to my services, too. Needless to say, I'm pretty busy. But isn't everyone?"
The winners were selected from thousands of entries from across the nation. Entrants were asked to write in 100 words or less why their nominee represents "the spirit of the American worker" and deserves recognition. Winners have included a woman aircraft mechanic, a hog farmer, a waitress, a stonemason, a coal mine rescue worker and a high school industrial shop teacher.
Each state winner will receive over $500 in cash and gifts, including a commemorative Dickies 2002 American Worker of the Year work jacket. Five previous national winners have been announced on ABC's "Good Morning America."
