MIAMI - June 22 - (Miami Herald) -- Thomas J. McCann, a notable contributor to Broward and Miami-Dade charities and co-founder of an Opa-locka vinyl flooring manufacturer, has died. He was 62.

McCann died of lung cancer on Saturday at his Parkland home.

He and his wife, Joan, were longtime contributors to the Miami Rescue Mission and Feed The Poor, which provide meals to the homeless, as well as the Hospice Care of Southeast Florida Inc.

Five months ago, McCann and his wife founded the McCann Family Charitable Foundation to ensure their continued support of these programs.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Thomas McCann moved to Miramar as an executive of a start-up floor covering manufacturer. The company was sold to National Gypsum Co., where McCann remained as vice president of research and development, family members said.

In that job, McCann developed four patents, the most notable being an ultraviolet-resistant coating for sheet floor covering that cut down on major maintenance work for the consumer. That patent was sold to Armstrong World Industries.

In the mid-1980s, McCann co-founded the American Thermoplastic Extrusion Co., which manufactures vinyl floor products and employs 150 in Opa-locka. The company is now a subsidiary of the Roppe Corp. of Fostoria, Ohio.

McCann and his wife lived in Weston from 1991 to 1999 before settling in Parkland.

In addition to his wife, Joan, McCann is survived by sons Michael, Daniel, and Steven.
