How Keywords Work For Carpet Cleaning Web Sites

When you set your web site up, post to your blog, and create incoming links, the keywords you choose are important. These keywords help search engines determine what keywords your site ranks for. Also, when you pay per click with Google Adwords or Yahoo, choosing the wrong keyword could cost you lots of money.



Many of you may have gotten an e-mail that looks a little something like this:

Subject: Your website ranking

I was looking at websites under the keyword "Vinyl Cleaning" and came across your site http://www.YourDomainName.com. I see you're ranked # 73 in Google.

I'm not sure if you're aware of why you're ranked this low but it is easily correctable.

There's no reason you can't have a high ranking for this keyword. You have a nice website.

I can help you get ranked for ALL your keywords….etc.


Okay, to be honest, the first time I received this e-mail I was a little concerned. It made me think for a moment there was something I was missing. The e-mail appears very personal and even helpful.

But here's the critical point that makes this e-mail utter nonsense and even somewhat of a scam:

Carpet cleaning websites do NOT need to rank in the search term "Vinyl Cleaning." Even if you do vinyl cleaning, this is way too broad of a keyword. A search for this phrase will result in vinyl cleaning companies all over the country.

The sender of this e-mail assumes the reader knows nothing about Google and about how search engines work. The e-mail is simply a ploy to get you to respond back to the sender. Once you respond you may get hounded with spam about search engine optimization.

Why It's Imperative to Use the Best Keyword Phrases

The Basics of How Keywords Work
Keywords can either be a single word or an entire phrase. For instance, "Carpet" is a keyword. And the keywords, "Carpet Cleaning Atlanta" are a keyword phrase. Typically, when we speak about keywords, we're talking about an entire Keyword phrase or a single keyword.

For a local search like carpet cleaning, your keywords should be selected by the area your target prospect lives. The keyword phrase, "Carpet Cleaning YourCity" is usually the most often searched. In some cases, carpet cleaning is searched by zip code. But this is more likely to happen in large cities. Even less seldom, searches are done by county.

If you do tile cleaning, you may want to get ranked in the search for "Tile Cleaning Yourcity." If you do flood cleanup, you may want to get ranked in the search for "Flood Cleaning Yourcity." If you do upholstery cleaning, you may want to get ranked well for "Upholstery Cleaning Yourcity."

But DON'T overdo it with the keywords. Google frowns on having too many keywords embedded in your webpage and considers it keyword spam.

It's impossible for your website to rank naturally in ALL keywords. If it were possible, Google wouldn't be a searchable database. If you do a search for "Carpet Cleaning Marketing," you're looking for information about marketing. Anything else would mean a clutter of information.

Here's other search terms you may get emails about:
  • "Carpet Cleaning" (unless you're a distributor, you don't want to rank high in this keyword)
  • "Vinyl Cleaning Yourcity" (this is too broad and could include any type of vinyl cleaning)
  • "Water Damage" (unless you're a national company, you want a city name in the phrase)
  • "Carpet Yourcity" (unless you sell carpet, this isn't your ideal keyword)

Be careful about how you play the internet game. Yes, it can be very profitable at a low investment. But consider your keyword phrases carefully.
