IICRC offering Mold Remediation Certification

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- The Institute for Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is offering the Applied Microbial Remediation Technician (AMRT) and Applied Microbial Remediation Specialist (AMRS) Certifications.

The courses teach mold and sewage remediation techniques to individuals engaged in property management, property restoration, and Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) investigations or other related professions. The course emphasis will be on teaching mold and sewage remediation techniques to individuals who will perform these procedures in the field. The course includes classroom study as well as hands-on training. Course graduates will be adequately equipped to perform remediation services, while protecting their health and safety of co-workers and building occupants.

According to IICRC president Lee Zimmerman, "This is one of most ambitious and well-researched certification categories and exams ever compiled by an IICRC Task Force. It covers mold and sewage remediation, both of which are major concerns for IICRC registrants and their clients. Further, it meets the IICRC objectives of comprehensive coverage of subject matter combined with actual hands-on training."

Unlike most other IICRC certifications, AMRT/S certifications are earned in two parts. The AMRT certification is earned by attending an IICRC approved four-day course and passing a comprehensive AMRT exam. The prerequisite is the IICRC Water Restoration Technicians certification. AMRS certification is earned after meeting three additional qualifications, including:

One year of field experience,
Completing the IICRC Health and Safety Technician certification, OSHA 10-Hour Safety Course, or comparable safety training, and
Completing 10 verified microbial remediation projects or working 1,000 hours on a verified microbial remediation project(s).

IICRC Certified Firms employing IICRC Certified technicians are eligible for referrals received through the IICRC 800 referral number or the IICRC web site.

Applications for AMRT approved-instructor status may be obtained from IICRC headquarters after February 1, 2002. Approved schools should begin offering AMRT certification by early spring 2002.

Contributors to the IICRC AMRT/S Task Force included Darrell Paulson, chair; Jeff Bishop, co-chair; Rachel Adams, Jeff Charlton, Ed Cross, Dr. Eugene Cole, Jim Holland, Patrick Moffett, Larry Robertson, Peter Sierck and Charlie Wiles.

The IICRC (www.iicrc.org) is the certification registry that develops and monitors educational programs and standards for the inspection, cleaning and restoration industry. Founded in1972, IICRC is the largest non-profit registry of inspectors, cleaners and restorers serving the U.S., Canada, Great Britain and Australia. For more information, call (360) 693.5675.
