The CFI mourns the passing of our good friend and President Emeritus Carl Williams. He was the founder and president of The Academy of Textiles & Flooring in Whittier, California. Carl was a popular instructor, and a bigger-than-life icon in the floor covering industry, the heart and soul of the IICRC. Carl was a graduate of the University of Southern California holding a Bachelor and a Masters degree in Business Administration. In addition, he attended the University of San Diego School of Law for two years. He was a parachute test jumper in the US Navy.

Carl has been presented numerous awards, including CFI`s Joe Laurino Carpet Cleaner of the Year award, and is an unequaled five-time recipient of the Bill Bailey Memorial award. He wrote for a number of floor covering trade publications, and has authored or co-authored with Mike West some of the best instructional textbooks currently available. Carl`s best-known publication is his big, red, 700-page “Floorcovering Dictionary” that he once jokingly said he wrote in one night; the book is commonly quoted through out the industry.

Countless students and instructors who have been to Carl`s school have said how close they felt to Carl, how he was their mentor and responsible for their successful careers. Many have said that Carl not only created the necessary motivation and positive attitude for them to succeed, but he also gave them the skills and the knowledge to do it. He will be greatly missed.
