These past few months have been quite active for the individual chapters of the Carpet and FabriCare Institute, thanks to directors like Gene Spinozzi, Gabriel Peretti and Vince Attardo. With these guys as directors, it really pays to be a member of CFI.

Central California Chapter Events
The central California chapter of the CFI organized a blood drive in September in memory of the 9/11 victims and their families. A group of concerned carpet- and upholstery-cleaning professionals joined forces with Cleanway Sanitary Supply and Houchin Blood Bank to bring the Bloodmobile to the Cleanway facility.

“This chapter has always felt that community service and civic obligation were an important part of living and working in a community,” Gene Spinozzi, director for the central California chapter, said. “It was hoped that bringing the mobile unit to the cleaning contractors and customers of Cleanway, more folks would be willing to take a few minutes from their busy schedule to show their support for our nations heroes. The drive was a huge success and the day ended with a lot of people feeling pretty good about their participation.”

In addition, the second annual “Operation Carpet Care-ing” was held Oct. 5 in Bakersfield, Calif. by the central California chapter. The community service event was co-sponsored by the International Sanitary Supply Association’s “Operation Cleansweep.” Some 46 volunteers from both associations gave a much-needed face-lift to the Bakersfield Rescue Mission. The mission is home to hundreds of individuals and families who need a little help to get back on their feet.

“There is nothing like a labor of giving to bring out the best in the business community,” Spinozzi said.

At 7 a.m., an army of people, trucks and equipment engulfed the sleepy facility with a single purpose: to show that you can get more by giving than receiving. The clients and staff of the Rescue Mission worked side by side with cleaning professionals to put the two-story, 25,000-square-foot building back into a clean, sanitary condition after years of doing without.

“It was quite a sight to see a building completely surrounded by truckmounts and so many hoses running in every single door,” Aaron Kidwell of Kidwell Bros. Carpet Cleaning said.

Many of the neighbors were also curious at what was happening to the normally quiet neighborhood.

“There must have been something in the air besides cleaning products,” Spinozzi noted, “because too many people were having too much fun with all the work that was taking place.”

Learning-Filled Night For Los Angeles Chapter
Cleaning Plus Equipment and Supplies in Oxnard, Calif. hosted the CFI L.A. chapter meeting on Oct. 23. Masterblend President and IICRC-certified Instructor Aaron Groseclose presented a great review class on Oriental rug cleaning. Thirty carpet cleaners from as far away as Long Beach and Santa Monica attended an event that turned out to be a valuable learning experience as well as a fun night.

Groseclose’s knowledge and experience kept everyone trying to “pick his brain” to improve their own understanding about rug identification and proper cleaning procedures. Highlights included: how to set up cleaning shops with different budgets; how to recognize inexpensive rugs from the higher priced items; and how to get fringes really white.

Some business owners came to the class with novice technicians who profited from the information. After about three hours of hard work, Frank Perez, owner of Cleaning Plus, treated attendees to a great dinner of chicken and pasta. It was a satisfying end to a great evening that put a smile on everyone’s face.
