WAYNESBORO -- Mohawk Industries will close its Waynesboro plant by the end of the year, leaving its last 120 employees without jobs, the company announced Monday.
The decision was "driven by the necessity of aligning production capacity with market demands," Mohawk said in a statement. Company officials could not be reached for comment.
Stung by the ongoing slump in the housing market and dwindling demand for carpet, Mohawk eliminated 40 Waynesboro jobs in August, following 73 layoffs in January. In 2008, Mohawk announced the layoffs of more than 1,000 people across its operations.
"It's bad news for the city and it's even worse news for the employees that are going to lose their jobs," Mayor Tim Williams said.
