BSCAI releases statement on recent immigration enforcement actions

The Building Service Contractors Association International released a statement pertaining to recent immigration enforcement activities and what it says is a need for federal activity on worker misclassification.

The statement calls for federal officials to join with their state colleagues to fight worker misclassification practices and abuses that the BSCAI says, "appear to underlie recent enforcement incidents," rather than exclusively focusing on immigration enforcement strategies that, "further frustrate and complicate the industry's worker-shortage issues."

The statement singles out industry contractors who are deliberately misclassifying janitorial employees as independent contractors, a practice known as "illegal subcontracting." The practice deprives federal and state governments of millions of dollars in revenue, and workers of benefits and protections of a wide range of laws and insurance programs.
