Obviously, the first thing that comes to mind when posed with that question, is, where is there? Most business owners are so immersed in the day to day operations of their business that they really don’t know where they are going. Could that be true of you?

Do you have a dream and do you have a plan to get there? If you have not taken the time to figure out what your successful business would look like, let me help you put a strategy together.
What is Your Big Dream?
It is important to know this because this will fuel your efforts. You need a “why” to get through the ups and downs that every business has.
Have You Set Your Goals?
Written goals are absolutely necessary to achieving your dreams. As this new year of 2010 gets off the ground, I am amazed at how many carpet cleaning companies that I talk to on my group accountability calls still do not have goals for this year.
Take three hours or more and write out your 2010 business goals, 1st quarter goals, 2010 personal goals and 2010 personal financial goals. Be as detailed as possible. Then make goals for three and five years down the road and go as far out into the future as you like.
Tell People Your Goals
This will probably be uncomfortable but there is a lot of power is expressing your goals publicly.
Make a Detailed Marketing Plan
Whoever the sales person is in your company should have a written strategy that is very specific. In many companies the salesperson is the owner. A written marketing plan takes discipline but feel the fear and do it anyways.
Do You Have Personnel in Place?
Once a business begins to grow, staff is needed and the key to success is that you have great people working for you. Low performers must be let go and your business dreams are much more likely to become reality when you have high performers working for you.
Don’t put up with the excuses and the hassles, hire the best and fire the rest!
Are Your Services the Best in Your Market?
I can ask one question to a carpet cleaning company and their answer will usually tell me if that company is top notch or not. The question is, “Do you make follow-up calls to all of your clients after the job is completed.”
The answer to that question speaks volumes and until you answer with a yes, your company is second rate.
Obviously, your company needs to be keeping up with the latest trends in the industry and you must be certified and attending conventions and seminars.
Are You Diversifying?
In this day and age, the successful companies are not only cleaning carpet and upholstery but adding services like tile and grout cleaning, Oriental rug cleaning, natural stone restoration, hardwood floor maintenance, fire and water damage restoration, drapery and blind cleaning, etc.
We are fortunate to be in an industry where we can add services, so take the time to determine what is best for your company and go after those dollars that are out there. Don’t jump into a service haphazardly, be a savvy business person and thoroughly study your next move because big bucks can be wasted on a service that really isn’t for you.
I can speak from experience in this regard and probably many other owners would agree that you have to be careful when adding other services.
What Could Be Holding You Back?
Being a business owner is like being a symphony conductor. All the different instruments must be in harmony or the music won’t sound right. It is not easy running a successful company and there is no scarcity of excuses for failure.
What is holding you back? Could it be your attitude, personnel, low prices, laziness, fear, lack of focus, personal issues, time or a host of other reasons. Figure out what your dragon is and slay it.
The Glue to Making Your Company a Success is Accountability
As the boss, you don’t have to answer to anyone and that can be a big problem. No matter how large your company is, you need to be accountable to someone for your actions.
It is best that your accountability partner not be a friend because they will go easy on you. Find someone to hold you to the fire, whether it be a business coach, trusted employee or another business owner.
Write Out Your Success Story and Then Get to Work
Have some fun and write the story about how you became so successful even if, at the moment, you are mired in the muck.
Dream big, write down your plan and get to work. You just might find yourself actually getting where you always wanted to be!
