IICRC Operations - The Volunteers

There are literally hundreds of IICRC volunteers who give their personal and professional time and donate their expertise to the betterment of the inspection, cleaning and restoration industry.
The IICRC is like any other volunteer organization, and many times the 80-20 rule applies. Some volunteers work more than others depending on their ability to serve. But no matter how many hours each gives, the IICRC can’t function without this volunteer effort.
The seven-member Executive Committee is charged with carrying out the day-to-day operations of the organization. It includes the president; two vice-presidents in Darrell Paulsen and Mike Reed; an international vice president in Paul Pearce; Secretary Barry Lichtenstein; Treasurer Ed Hobbs, and Certification Council Chair Joe Dobbins. Each of these officers has served on the IICRC board in various capacities for at least five years. They are required to meet specific qualifications as outlined in the IICRC Policy and Procedures manual, and some spend as much as 20, 30 or more, hours weekly dealing with IICRC issues. It’s like a second job.
One of the requirements of the EC is that each member currently chair (or had chaired) a major committee. For example, Mike Reed chairs Instructors and Schools, Paul Pearce chairs the International Committee, Barry Lichtenstein chairs Registrant Standards Committee, Ed Hobbs chairs the Finance Committee, Joe Dobbins chairs the Certification Council, and I chair the Marketing and PR Committee.
The IICRC Board of Directors is made up of representatives from 12 regional associations (e.g., MSPCA, CFI, CCINW, NEIRC, PCUCA, AWCC, NYRCI), two national (UK and Australia) and two international (SCRT, WFCA) associations. These representatives have been assigned by their organizations to “sit” on the IICRC Board. In addition, there are six industry-at-large members and honorary board members, including Cy Gantt and Lee Zimmerman. Board members are required to attend two board meetings annually and serve on committees. Many chair either a standing committee or a Technical Advisory Committee.
Standing Committees deal with the operations of the organization and include Budget and Finance; Marketing and PR; Exams, Instructors and Schools; Standards and Certified Firms, just to name a few. The IICRC organizational chart shows how complex the IICRC has become over the past 36 years.
The Certification Council (CC) is the technical arm of the IICRC. It is made up of IICRC supporters from numerous related industries including floor covering, upholstery, rug manufacturers, and chemical and equipment formulators, manufacturers and distributors, and many others interested in our organization. The Certification Council meeting is held twice a year in conjunction with the board meetings.
Technical Advisory Committees. The IICRC currently offers certification in 21 separate technical categories and several apprentice-level courses. In addition, there are two new TACs developing courses (Commercial Drying Specialist and Applied Sewage Remediation), which should be available in early 2009. We’re even considering a Housekeeping Certification in the not-to-distant future. Each category has a chairperson and many also have a vice-chair to lead the members of the committees through the process of revising IICRC-approved courses and exams. This process may take several years to complete.
Currently, the IICRC has several special Task Forces, which deal with short-term issues concerning the organization. A task force typically works on their project for less than a year. One exception is the Restructure Task Force chaired by former president Carey Vermeulen. This task force is investigating the process for IICRC certifications to become ANSI accredited.
There are countless other volunteers working in and around IICRC. Each of the shareholder associations has board and regular members who contribute their time and energy to help improve the industry. For example, Gary Glenn, Patti Savelle, Tom Sherman, and Chris Taylor serve on the Executive Committee of the SCRT, and Jeff Bishop is the technical advisor. They all very work hard to keep it thriving.
I also have to give a special “nod” to two young volunteers, Androchelle and Mark Cermak, who organize the Summerfest event every year. Just like so many others, they gladly give their time and energy to help others learn and prosper in their businesses.
IICRC was founded by a handful of volunteers some 36 years ago; some of those original founders are still involved today. They provide the organization with the historical perspective it needs.
Since its founding, the IICRC has grown to a very large organization with the help of hundreds of volunteers. If you’re one of them, on behalf of the IICRC, I want to thank you! Your efforts have helped make our organization become well respected and widely recognized by government agencies, insurance companies, state legislatures, carpet and upholstery manufacturers, and consumers throughout the world.
