Naming rights: a tale of two Roth Carpets

January 17, 2011

It wasn't until after he had closed his long-established carpet business in 2009 that Richard Roth became irked at a would-be competitor. Mr. Roth believed the newcomer, a carpet-cleaning executive who had just entered carpet sales, was taking advantage of his good name and the reputation that his family had taken three generations to build.

After all four Roth Carpet and Floors showrooms shut their doors, another entrepreneur from Roth Carpet Cleaning Inc. filed to use the business name of Roth Carpet and Flooring 2 U. The "2 U" entity ran newspaper ads promising "quality you expect from the name you trust." From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
