Solutia Welcomes TieTek to 'Partners for Renewal' Program

September 26, 2003
ST. LOUIS, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- In an effort to bring innovative new technology, products, and programs to the contract carpet market, Solutia Inc. continues to expand its "Partners for Renewal" program, formally recognizing and working with companies like TieTek, who are leaders in the area of carpet sustainability. TieTek is a wholly owned subsidiary of North American Technologies Group, Inc. located in Houston, TX.

TieTek has agreed to test and develop the use of post consumer carpet as a key component for composite railroad crossties. "We already have a number of test ties in the field and initial results indicate crossties containing carpet fiber will be an excellent product with a great environmental story," says TieTek President and CEO Henry Sullivan, Ph.D. "Today we have to cut down over three million trees a year in the U.S. alone to make wood crossties that must be treated with creosote, which leaches into the environment. Composite crossties will help us accomplish our ultimate goal to protect the environment by eliminating the need for cutting down trees, discontinuing the use of creosote, and keeping carpet and other recycled materials out of landfills. Composite crossties also last up to five times longer than wood ties."

Partners for Renewal is a unique initiative designed to facilitate the recovery and reuse of valuable natural resources embodied in post consumer carpet. "Our strategy is to promote collaboration and encourage an entrepreneurial spirit in order to accomplish two key objectives," stated Robert Peoples, Ph.D, director of carpet sustainability & business development, Solutia Inc. "The first objective is to find ways to divert carpet from landfills and waste to energy via new process and product technology -- reusing the oil originally used to create these products. The second objective is to help facilitate the efforts of entrepreneurs committed to the first objective by lending the credibility and resources of Solutia. The use of post consumer carpet in composite crossties will be a win-win for the railroads, TieTek, the carpet industry, and the environment."

"Solutia is excited to be working with a TieTek, a leader in composite railroad crosstie technology. Our objective is to deliver real solutions to the challenge of carpet landfill diversion. This is a major step forward in our ability to meet our commitment and support the mission of the Carpet America Recovery Effort (C.A.R.E.)," said Kaye Gosline, director, contract fiber sales.
