The NE Ohio Chapter of the Society of Cleaning and Restoration Technicians held a meeting last November in Medina. The meeting was well attended, with more than 18 members and one guest company making the trip.

Our featured speaker, Mark Violand of Violand Flooring Inspections, led the group through some updated carpet manufacturer commercial carpet cleaning maintenance specifications and warranties. It was interesting to learn that if you are using a bonnet-type cleaning method or a triple head, rotary-pad machine, you may be voiding the carpet’s warranty.

Many of us use these methods and equipment in our companies daily, and have been doing so for years with great results. What Mark tried to do was to help define proper vs. improper procedures, methods, and equipment, and to help us understand what these warranties may mean and the impact they could have on cleaning companies out there maintaining commercial carpet.

There was simply not enough time to discuss and cover all aspects of this issue. We just scratched the surface. There are just too many “what if” scenarios, so we will continue this cleaning conundrum by holding a “Part Two” on Feb. 18 at D&R Carpet Service in Brooklyn Heights from 8:30 am to noon. We will make a 1/2 IICRC Continuing Education Credit available to those who attend.

We will also take a more in-depth look into commercial carpet maintenance issues, and have hands-on, real-time demonstrations to see if we can replicate the damage caused by some of these methods and equipment. So come join the discussion, and share and network with some of the most informed cleaners in the industry.

The cost will be $40 for SCRT members and $60 for non-members. Price includes lunch and refreshments. Space is limited, and SCRT members get first dibs. This has been a hot topic across the industry and this will be the first of its kind, so make sure you get your RSVP in today. Call Tom Sherman at (330) 262-0936 ext.6, or email for more information.
