As an industry we associate the use of airmovers primarily with carpet cleaning and water damage services. But, why not take advantage of an airmover's quick drying capabilities after cleaning upholstery cushions?
Airmovers/Handheld Dryers
Placing the airmover on a portable table leaves the dryer level with the piece being dried. Stand your freshly cleaned cushions 'teepee' style on the sofa base and train the blower on them. By the time you have completed your other services-i.e., carpet cleaning, etc.-the furniture is dry and ready for use.Handheld blow dryers can serve this same purpose in a pinch, but are more time consuming. When using handheld dryers, always keep the temperature setting on cool/warm air. Never train hot air directly on a cushion because you risk driving the moisture into the backing of the weave, leaving open the potential for permanent damage/staining.
Extra Protection
Always keep a supply of old bed sheets in your van. Use these to completely cover the muslin lining on the sofa/chair base. Plain tap water can permanently stain this material, so place the cushions to be cleaned on top of the sheets. We also cover the carpeting around the furniture when we are not cleaning the carpet in the room. While providing a protective barrier during cleaning, it also presents a nice visual for the client and shows you to be a caring professional!Lost Treasures
Consider keeping a supply of 'lost treasure' envelopes on hand-legal size envelopes with your company name on them will suffice. These are a client favorite and are used to return all of those goodies you found behind, under and in the cracks and crevices of upholstery!Over the years, I have 'relocated' everything from long lost wedding rings and misplaced paperwork to watches and more. There isn't anything more rewarding than the look on a client's face when you hand them a 'lost treasure' envelope! It also says a lot about the 'character' and honesty of your firm and techs!
Oh, and one other tidbit: We use a myriad of brushes (nylon, horsehair, edging, etc.) when performing upholstery cleaning services. Because you will too, remember to always keep a clean towel at your side-either on the carpet or furniture-on which to place your brushes. Never leave a brush on a cushion or armrest. Neatness should always be a priority!
