Yes, It Takes Work; It's Making the Work Count That Matters

May 18, 2008
Workaholic. Type-A personality. Compliments or terms of derision, depending on who you’re asking. I’m writing this with Game 7 on in the background, Cavs and Celtics, so you know where I stand. Then again, who’s to say how much is too much?

Workaholic. Type-A personality. Compliments or terms of derision, depending on who you’re asking. I’m writing this with Game 7 on in the background, Cavs and Celtics, so you know where I stand. Then again, who’s to say how much is too much?

A lot is made - and rightfully so - of the fact that many professionals in the cleaning industry pay too much attention to the job and not enough to themselves, particularly as health and family go. You know the story: guy spends 10 years pushing the wand, six days a week, then wakes up one morning and finds the house empty, feels every ache and twinge in his joints, can’t see his toes for his belly and wonders, “Hey, what happened?”

Then there’s the other guy. He puts in the hours and then some. He works out, watches what he eats and regularly spends time with the family, even if it means turning the computer back on each night after the kids go to bed. And yet, when it’s all said and done, he’s actually looking forward to doing it all over again tomorrow.

It’s about vision. Yes, success takes effort, it takes sweat and it takes tenacity. But some approaches are smarter than others. The first guy’s a short-term thinker; the second guy takes the long view. It’s just another way of looking at what guys have been asking for years: do you have a job, or do you run a business? Think about it like this: the former will get you paid today; the latter will get you paid.
